The Shepherd’s Voice

My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand (Jn.10:27-28).

As Jesus walked about in the temple area on the Portico of Solomon, the Jews asked Him if He is the Messiah. He answered that He already told them but they did not believe because they were not among His sheep.  Once again Jesus described His relationship to those who believe in Him like that of a shepherd to his sheep. He says, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me”(Jn.10:27).

The sheep have poor eyesight because of that they depend on their shepherd and their shepherd care for them. The sheep, however, have an excellent sense hearing. They knew the shepherd’s voice and they follow his lead. He leads them to green pasture where they can graze and in still waters where they can drink. Using this metaphor, Jesus speaks as our Good Shepherd by calling us His sheep.  Through the sacrament of baptism that we received we belong to the flock of Christ. Jesus reveals the intimate relationship between a shepherd and a sheep and He highlights the characteristic of His sheep. They hear His voice and they follow Him because they know Him.

A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day - 30,000 to a man's 15,000. The wife replied, "The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men.” The husband then turned to his wife and asked, “What?” Sad to say, like the woman who has to repeat everything to her man, Jesus has to call us many times, because we failed to follow Him because we don’t know Him. Like the sheep with the poor eyesight, sometimes we fall into sin because we are confused, in doubt, misguided, or don’t really care at all. Jesus our Good Shepherd calls us to direct us to the right path. Yet, we need to have an excellent sense of hearing. The only way for us to be protected from danger and sin is to listen to the Shepherd’s voice. Thus, we need to know His voice to follow Him. Unfortunately, there are so many voices that try to arrest our attention, and we need to know which is the Good Shepherd’s. How does our Good Shepherd speak to us? Jesus speaks to us in various ways: through the scripture, our conscience, our priests, friends, and even strangers. He speaks to us through our blessings, the good things in life that we are in enjoying. He also speaks to us through our problems and adversities. But we can only hear His voice in the silence of our hearts in prayers.  To receive the fullness of life the Good Shepherd is giving us, we need to hear, to know and to follow Him and this could only happen when we pray. This is the only way to grow in His love. Mother Teresa said, “The beginning of holiness is found in faithfulness to prayer. If we pray, we will believe. If we believe we will love. If we love we will serve.”

May our prayers lead us to a deeper knowledge of Jesus, our Good Shepherd, so that we can listen to Him, love Him more dearly and follow Him more nearly and therefore, receive the eternal life He is giving us.
